By now, everyone knows they should be trying to eat more WHOLE grains but are we? Pick up most ANY breads at the grocery store, though, and you will realize that it’s not easy to find one. If the ingredients say ENRICHED, than there is your tip that the grains are not whole. You cannot just read the package, you MUST read the ingredients. Ezekiel bread is a great source of sprouted whole grains, and though I have eaten it on and off for decades, the taste and texture leave something to be desired. This past week I bought a 100% whole grain bread pre-packaged in the Publix bakery, and it is both hearty and delicious, framed with sunflower seeds in crust. A hearty, grainy bread will provide a good amount of fiber which will help not only fill you up, but KEEP you full well after the meal. Same goes for pasta! Read the ingredients. Look for 100% whole wheat or whole grain. Mueller makes just such a pasta, while other big companies like Ronzoni and and Barilla mix whole wheat with semolina, which is what regular pasta is made from. Beware of packaging on breads and pastas that tricks us by saying things like “12 grain,” or “multi-grain,” or “whole grain.” READ THE INGREDIENTS. Remember, most of us are NOT getting the amount of fiber we need to achieve healthy weights and keep our colons clean and happy. Don’t give up the bread, just make good choices.
Wanna try something really good on your grainy bread? Try mixing (mash together with a fork) peanut butter and about a half of a banana together before spreading on the bread. When you combine them, they take on a somewhat fluffy (and easy to spread) texture and an awesome taste. Drizzle a little honey (or even better, agave nectar) it’s a super healthy, super yummy meal. You can even grill it, if you want to be really decadent! If you are counting calories, go easy on the peanut butter and you can enjoy this meal without guilt. Now I know what I am having for one of my meals today…

an old famous favorite… grill them on the stove for an unbelievable treat. I absolutely LOVE that combination. So….let’s all enjoy this famous, easy and healthy sandwich. By the way…..sometimes I just spread some peanut butter on a slice of banana sans the bread. Yum!
