Sometimes at the end of a work day, it’s really easy to lose motivation for a workout. While you may bring your workout clothes to work and plan to hit the treadmill running or participate in your favorite class, but as the day goes on, home starts calling you and with each passing hour, your couch starts to look better and better. First, remember what your long term goals are and focus in on them. Ask yourself if you would rather lounge around or fit back into that sexy dress you have front and center of your closet, waiting patiently to be worn to that upcoming event. Visualize how you will look and feel when you can zip that zipper up, again. Then, commit to just getting in a good warmup at the gym. If you still too exhausted once you finish your warmup, you can always go home. Chances are almost 100% that you will decide to stay and complete your workout, having overcome your obstacle of the day.
Look at endurance swimmer Diana Nyad. She may never, ever complete her incredibly aggressive goal of swimming from Cuba to Florida, but as she celebrates her 63rd birthday, she is looking damn fit, for the trying. And who knows, maybe the 5th try will be the charm.
Let’s all get busy setting some goals and then always remember, it’s the journey, not the destination. If you have some motivational tips that have worked for you on those days you would rather not workout, please do share!
