Mitch and I took a few days to enjoy some peace and fitness in Orlando. We visited the infamous mice and their friends in Disney where we had a lot of laughs but also logged in a good amount of walking. We had ample time for relaxing and napping but also managed to get in some swimming and a trip to the fitness center which was quite state of the art. Not thinking I would have any need for yoga clothes, I was sorry I didn’t pack any, as Saturday morning was yoga out on the “island” which was quite beautiful (so this is when we hit the gym). While good plant-based food items were a little tough to find at the hotel, I did have a great vegetable hash one morning and will be trying to replicate that at home very soon! I also had some yummy edamame hummus, which is a nice change from some of the other beans that hummus is usually made from. All and all, it was great to get away and as always, great to come home. Hitting the beach for some peace and fitness yesterday just extended our vacation. We took a nice walk along the sand and the ocean was calm enough to swim (and play) in. I have to admit it felt really good to have a home-cooked meal last night. I roasted a ton of vegetables, a plate of tofu cubes and made a vegan style Waldorf salad, inspired by one I had at the hotel, as well as a garden salad. Mitch grilled up some shrimp and pineapple skewers and we both agreed there was nothing quite so beautiful or tasty on the menu at the Waldorf as what we put together last night. Again, great to get away and great to be back home. Special thanks to Nicole for watching the furry friends.
Now, here it is Labor Day, but it’s unlike any that most of us have experienced until now. No Jerry Lewis and not even a telethon. Sure, the Muscular Dystrophy Association did a mini-telethon last night without Jerry (where IS Jerry?) but to my eye it was put together poorly and Jerry’s presence was clearly missed. For those that don’t know, I (along with my sister, Arlene) was rather involved with this organization in my younger days, as a volunteer at summer camp, and later employed by their national headquarters, then in NYC, where I worked in writing and production of the shows as well as serving as Jerry Lewis’ ghost writer. JL as we called him, was every bit as crazy as you would imagine and not always in the nicest of ways, but I can’t think of a single reason it would have been appropriate for him to be booted, as the media is claiming. Maybe today will hold some answers. I know that many of you grew up on this yearly tradition so I posted some links to articles below, in case you are interested in reading a little more.
Today–Labor Day–while some are off, and the gym I teach at is closed, it’s always been a working day for me and I guess working with muscle has been my lifetime theme. So I am off to train some disciplined, committed clients this morning. Tomorrow I will be starting a new class at 11:30 at Tamarac Fitness Center. While it will be appropriate for our SilverSneakers students, I also hope it can be a good strength training workout for ANYONE who participates. We are calling it Senior Strength training and while it will be similar to SilverSneakers, there will be a little less dancing, more attention to building strong muscles and bones, and a little less routine in format Chairs will be used more to hold our equipment and serve as “barres,” than to sit our butts in! Expect squats, lunges and definitely some yoga thrown in. Think personal trainer in a group setting. Hope to see you there tomorrow and every Tuesday at 11:30.
Working or not, I hope you will find time for some of your own peace and fitness, today and every day. Thanks for stopping in. Keep on keeping on. I am getting great feedback from some of you ( I will protect your privacy but you know who you are and I am so happy for you and proud of you!!!) regarding your pounds and inches lost as well as the health you have gained! As the effects of weight loss and daily exercise continue, it only gets better! Great job.
Finally, if any of you had a chance to watch The Last Heart Attack, I hope you will tell me what you thought. I will let you know if I find out it is airing again. If you are local and want to watch, I still have it on my DVR. Let me know!
