Give Me Fuel Give Me Fire…………

It’s been too long since I have posted.  Today, inspired by the breeze and how it impacted my morning run (jog) –I decided to update the site, discard spam, check on comments and ramble random thoughts, so here’s the random thoughts and tidbits. of things effect our output when working out.  The cooler weather, breeze, frustration after waiting too long for a service worker and maybe even going on an empty (water of course, and coffee–of course) stomach, I had a faster, easy and more enjoyable run than usual.  IF YOU ARE HAPPY, SAD, EXCITED, MAD, FRUSTRATED, ANXIOUS, HEARTBROKEN  (and all the rest) use your energy positively and invest it in your workout.  It ALWAYS (and all ways) pays off!  A good workout will do wonders for your mental and physical well being.  That is why NIKE says…”just do it!”

It also helps to go in with a “cleaner” body.  Since all I had was a little red wine last night before dinner, I am sure my body was sharper than say, Sunday morning, when I ran after a couple of Saturday night cocktails.  I still pushed out 4 miles that morning, but much more slowly and with much more effort.  Cause and effect.

Speaking of alcohol, I found it quite interesting that it’s been all over the news that studies show when we drink when we are pregnant, it’s poses significant risk to our offspring.  Only interesting in that this is definitely not news.  It’s been 30ish years since my pregnancies and studies clearly showed this, then.  I guess what’s newsworthy is that the studies reveal the same risks now as they did then…and the take-away is that there is NO SUCH THING as moderate drinking when we are bringing another person into the world.  Sacrifice for our children begins even before they are born, but boy(s) is it worth it!

Once again, I am carrying the two petitions (solar energy and medical marijuana) with me almost everywhere.  I am not allowing them to get in the way of any workout time, so make sure to see me before or after class if you are a student who has wanted to sign them and hasn’t yet.  If seems like most of my students have signed them and interestingly they have been even most anxious to sign the medical marijuana petitions.  Many of my students are over 65 and the personal stories they have been sharing with me regarding this issue are spectacular!  My students DEFINITELY teach me more than I could ever teach them.  Remember these signatures are just to get these issues on our next ballot so we can vote on them.

I won’t be driving my car to the gym tonight so if you are reading this and coming to class, (tomorrow, too)  please don’t look in the parking lot and think I am not there!   7pm class will continue to put the emphasis on the principles of Pilates.  We have covered breathing and concentration.  Tonight we will move into centering.   We will continue this series for a few more weeks, always working yoga in, just like Joseph himself did.

Studies area also confirming that the more time we sit, the less years we live!  So on that note, I am getting up from my desk.  You may want to do the same.  A five minute break is productive and healthy! Repeat hourly.

Remember, treat your body like the temple it most certainly is.  When we love and respect ourselves, it is only natural that we treat others in the same manner.

What fuels your workouts and your committment?  Please let us know.

Love is Lovely….Let it Flow I have said it once, I have said it a billion or more times, people that workout and take care of themselves are some of the very kindest, most caring people in the universe.  Thank you to all my 8:30 in the morning students who responded so quickly and effortlessly to my suggestion yesterday at the end of class.  I don’t want to say too much until our “project” is completed, but you ladies came thru like nothing I have ever seen!  Within minutes I had people approaching me from all angles.

Your participation is going to mean the world to one person, but also to me, because my heart was truly warmed by your generosity and trust!  Hit me up personally if you are wondering what this is all about.

Love really is like currency.  It flows.  You have to put love out there in order to get love back.  This was the message of Tuesday night’s yoga/Pilates class and 25 hours later, I was able to witness just how true that is!

Later in the day, I had a long conversation with a loved one, about fitness, health, nutrition, school, money and happiness (the kinds that come from external sources, and true happiness which comes from within).  Money can buy a lot of awesome stuff as well as peace of mind and security.  It really CANNOT buy happiness and it CANNOT buy love.

Want to feel more internal happiness and self-love?  Remember to start giving of yourself.  Giving really is a selfish act, because what we give away comes back in abundance.

I am humbled by, and grateful to ALL my students.  A better family, I could not ask for!  Much love to all….

When Stress Rears it’s Ugly Head Friday!  Thanks to everyone who reached out to check in on me after I left the gym early Wednesday morning and did not come back for my next class.

Without going into a great deal of detail, I will simply share that stress can take it’s toll in physical ways that many of us can’t believe can really happen.  Thankfully, the stress was pretty much self-created and after a day of rest I felt much better.  The only reason I am sharing this is because we all need to listen to the triggers in our bodies because ultimately, they help us make decisions.  We also need to realize that stress and anxiety don’t manifest their symptoms in the same ways in each of us and sometimes we run to doctors who find all sorts of things wrong with us, but none of them are really the problem at all. (I am pretty sure most western doctors would NOT agree that a fever can come from stress)  So tune into YOUR body and YOUR symptoms so you can recognize a pattern of symptoms when they occur in YOUR life.  We are each so unique!

For those that asked, yes, I will be at class today with bells on.  Thanks to Ellen for pinch-hitting on Wednesday.

Wishing you all a very happy and above all else stress free weekend.  Much love………….

Good Advice for a Saturday

Many of us pick Saturday (or Sunday) as our “cheat” day.  Unfortunately, if we let ourselves go for the entire day, it may take us half of the following week to shed the extra calories.   The same is true for rule 5, which can be a big issue for those with emotional eating, especially.

This seems like some good advice.  Especially rule 1!  Have an awesome weekend.  Do what you have to do all week, so you can do what you really want to do on (or eat or drink) on “cheat” day.  Then enjoy the hell out of your indulgence.

Russell and Al Dine at Red Bamboo!

Thank you, thank you to the Today Show for a great little segment on this morning’s show called Vegan 101.  It was educational, informative and very positive!  The best part was when Russell Simmons took Al Roker to his favorite NYC restaurant Red Bamboo to sample a table full of amazing looking food.  Since I have eaten there twice (thank you, Derek for introducing me to that place and returning with me again on our last family trip to NY) I can definitely attest to how insanely amazing the food is at this all vegan joint in the village and highly recommend it!

Just a couple of images taken off the page after doing a Google search for images of Red Bamboo.

The pros and cons were shared.  On the pro list were many health benefits such as lower cholesterol, higher fiber intake, healthier for the cardio-vascular system and often a lower weight/BMI than animal eaters.

The list of cons, weren’t really cons, at all.  They included needing to supplement our vitamin B-12 (as that is only found in animal products).  Many animal eaters need to take B vitamins anyway, and it’s easy enough to get amble B-12 by sprinkling cheesy flavored nutritional yeast (not to be confused with brewers yeast which is bitter) on…almost anything/everything–or taking a supplement if necessary.  Of course, making sure ample protein is consumed was on the list, but that’s an easy one –if you are eating healthfully, including nuts and beans in your daily diet, there shouldn’t be a problem–even for an athlete!

It was also good to hear them include how good a vegan lifestyle is for the environment.  Even taking just one day a week, like Meatless Monday, makes a huge POSITIVE impact on our planet, and of course the animals.

Russell Simmons has a book out called the happy vegan.  If you are not familiar with who he is, Simmons is a business magnate who, amongst other things, co-founded the hip-hop music label Def Jam and started a few clothing lines, including Phat Farm.  He balances his very busy ying business life with yoga and daily meditation.  He also authored a book on meditation called Success Through Sitting.

Thank you to Deepak Chopra for another great meditation this morning.  Earlier in the week he suggested saying “thank you,” in place of “yes.”  This immediately brings more gratitude to you.   Today’s centering thought was:

Every thankful moment makes me healthier.”

I am grateful to you for coming in and taking a peak at peaceandfitness, this morning.  Thank you!

Want More? Ride the Current

This morning, gratitude rules.  Thanks to Deepak for day 2 of another 21 day guided meditation.  When we stop to really focus in all we have, we immediately have so much more…and the more we have, the more we can share!

In the book,  The 7 Laws of Spiritual Success, Chopra expands on the Law of Giving and how it relates to aiding in finding “a sense of well-being, good health, fulfilling relationships, energy and enthusiasm for life,” (his words).  Chopra claims the law should actually be called the Law of Giving and Receiving, because of the way it works.

While protecting the privacy of my family, friends and students (because this is the internet, after-all) I will refrain from naming individuals, but the law unfolds naturally as a 96 year old student tells me that the reason she has lived so happily and healthfully is because her mom always taught her if she had 5 cents, she had enough to share half with someone who had none.  Another, most special friend, was filled with joy each and every time she shared some of her vacation cash with street musicians, keeping the flow of currency alive.  Currency.  The word alone evokes…well, a current. And I can never leave out the lessons I have learned from a friend who showers me with thoughtfulness daily…or a student who brings me one lottery ticket every day just in case it’s THE ONE.  I am grateful to all these special people and hope they know how much they have taught me….and I hope you all know who you are!

For relationships are NO different than money.  There must be a constant flow of up and down, back and forth and of course, give and take.   Money aside, there is so much we can give to others.   Often, money is scarce and hard to part with.  (Though not according the mom who taught about the nickel!)  There is always something simple that can be shared…a single flower, a beautiful handwritten note of appreciation, a smile, a compliment, acknowledgement, acceptance, etc.

Deepak suggests if you want joy, you give joy…if you want love, you give love…if you want to be appreciated, learn to appreciate and if you want affluence, share what you can.

One of the greatest joys Mitch and I have had this season has been celebrating  wonderful milestones and events with our loved one.  There has been so much to celebrate!  We have also been sharing the fruits of our labor, (mangoes and even a pineapple) and it has been so much fun to do!

Imagine a world where we all thought “what can I give to each person I see today?…”  There would be no room for war, hate, or intolerance.  Imagine.

What a Difference 90 Days Can Make!

“You eat right and you exercise–and it works!”

Bryce/Extreme Weight Loss Makeover contestant –after losing 86 pounds in the first 90 days.

Bryce and his girlfriend, Amber, were inspired to lose weight for their wedding and together they lost about 200 pounds in 6 months!  Crazy.  While EXTREME is NOT wise for most of us, inspiration always is.  Not just for those that want to lose weight, but for hitting those workouts as well.

Find your inspiration and get busy.  Taking care of our bodies is a great way to build our self-esteem and confidence, while MAJORLY improving our physical and mental health.

We all have the same 24 hours in a day and, well, the same 90 days in 3 months.  The time to stop making excuses is NOW.  Set goals.  Get busy.

It Must be Sustainable, in Order to be Maintainable………

This morning the news reported that fad diets, while they work for weight loss in the short term, don’t work in the long term.  What works?  The reported concluded that exercise and healthful eating are the solution to long term weight loss.  AND THIS MAKES THE NEWS?  The problem with diets, to me, is that if you can go ON one, then of course, you can also go OFF of one, as well.  While there is no doubt that many fad diets are incredibly effective at getting the pounds off, if it is not something you can sustain for the long haul, it is highly unlikely you will be able to maintain the loss.  This is what leads to the yo-yo syndrome which is, according to those in the medical field, rather unhealthy.

While I am on this topic, I need to say, once again, as a society we need to stop confusing CARBS with CRAP!  If you are eating veggies and fruits, you are eating carbs and they are NEVER going to be what’s making/keeping you overweight.  From my experience, when people are successful on a low carb diet it’s because they have cut out the CRAP they ordinarily eat.  The main purpose of carbohydrates in our daily “diet,” is to provide energy to all the cells in the body.  If you are limiting your carbs enough, the body will resort to using the amino acids from protein, but only if your carb level is low enough to be in ketosis, which may have been a natural state for the caveman, but our modernized world has definitely not allowed for ANY of us to live like they did.  Ketosis is very controversial so I leave that up to you to do your homework.  Once again, this only happens when carb intake is EXTREMELY low and that means one is probably not getting ample fiber and nutrients to stay healthy even if they are losing weight.  I promise that if you listed all the carbs you eat and then delete the ones that are CRAP you will lose weight–perhaps not as fast as you would like, but in a way you can sustain to maintain!

Thanks to those that came back to the mat last night, proving it pays to “advertise.”  A simple reminder and a couple of flyers at the gym and class size doubled from last week to this week.   I love all the classes that I teach and love all the different types of training I do during my personal training sessions, but I have to admit that the peaceful yoga/Pilates stretch and stress reduction is the one that truly nurtures all aspects of our being–body, mind and soul.  As we continue to move into the season of giving, giving, giving, I hope that you will remember to take time out to give to the most important person of all….YOU.  We cannot give what we don’t already have, so taking care of YOU, really benefits everyone in your world.

Finally, I have to say that as I continue my daily practice of meditation, I am feeling much more focused on who I am and what I desire at my deepest level, which is helping others to feel good in their own bodies, minds and souls.  This was proof to me that taking time each day to take care of me by nurturing my spirit, allows me to appreciate how much I desire seeing others succeed in finding their own happiness through peace and fitness.  Namaste.

Who Am I (to Judge) ? the Seven Spiritual Laws of  Success by Deepak Chopra, the first is the Law of Pure Potentiality.  He suggests that one way to access our pure potentiality is by practicing NON-JUDGEMENT.  He goes on to say that “Judgement is the constant evaluation of things as right or wrong, good or bad.  When you are constantly evaluating, classifying, labeling, analyzing, you create a lot of turbulence in your internal dialogue.”

This really struck a chord with me (and I believe most of us, if we stopped to pay attention to ourselves, would agree we spend a lot of time in judgement…not just of others, but of ourselves as well) so I am working hard on step 3 of putting the law into action, which says “Today, I shall judge nothing that occurs.”   I will remind myself often and be aware of the times that I am about to make a judgement.

I challenge you to become aware of how often you find yourself making judgements.  Awareness, I have come to understand, is the first step towards improvement.  Goes for just about EVERY aspect of life…..Let me know what you become aware of as you set this challenge in motion.
