Spinning our Wheels

December 11, 2009 by Bonni

When it comes to fitness, the wheel continues to be re-invented, over and over again.  Hey, if you ask my son Derek,  which wheel you choose for your journey really does matter!  Personally, when choosing my own fitness wheels, I have always picked safe, affordable and reliable over pricey or trendy, but that’s just who I am.  Pushing, pulling, jumping and running have always been enough for me.  I am happy with good old fashioned aerobics and dumbbells or push-ups and dips.  Give me that tried and true yoga, but I did get on the Pilates bandwagon and have never regretted that!

Some people need to change their wheels often to keep motivated and excited.  They are attracted to shiny and new and for them, there are many, many excited wheels to choose from.  In one club in New York, members can choose between classes like “ballet burn” done to classical music, “Broadway blast” where you are like a chorus girl or boy, “cheer-leading” with pompoms, “wild west” and “tango” where dance moves focus on postural alignment and balance.

Classes that incorporate ballet barres, kettlebells, pole for cardio-strip tease and even drums can be found.  Here in Coral Springs, Florida all of these classes and more are available at Fusion Fitness and Yoga.

For the 65 and over crowd, SilverSneakers will be coming to more gyms than ever before as of the new year.  Remember that you can find my SilverSneakers class at Bally in Coral Springs and as of January 1, at Tamarac Fitness Center as well.  Check my class schedule page for details.  I will update this page as I have a definitive time on my classes in Tamarac.

If you are a gym rat or a runner, you may want to check out the new technology that Nike offers.  Nike plus is a system that involves attaching a small chip to your Nike sneaker and a connector to your iPod.  What you then have is a system of tracking your workouts or runs.  If you do not have an ipod, Nike has an attachment that you can purchase, as well.  Too much to explain, visit Nike.com or do what I did and google Nike plus, where you will find many links, some easier to navigate than others.  This looks like it would make a great gift for the fitness enthusiast in your life!  Thanks to Kyle for the enlightenment.

An of course there are always the real wheels, such as the ones on your bicycle or skates!  Great to see Derek show up to dinner on his bike last night.  He’s been logging the miles again!

Doesn’t matter what “wheels” turn you on, just matters you get out there and spin them…and make sure to enjoy the ride!

I am always searching online for articles that can help me with my quest for health and fitness. Thank you for covering all the different aspects of what makes us “healthy.” I just wanted to thank you and tell you that I am a constant reader. I am working on cutting down on eating animal fat and it is much easier than I thought. The less I eat it, the less I care to eat it. I live in the midwest and we are raised on some of the fattiest foods and with some very old fashioned eating ideas but I am relearning. Thanks again.

    Strategies to Avoid Emotional Eating…

Most likely you have never heard of rebounding? No, it has nothing to do with basketball, but it could improve your ‘ball game! A rebounder is basically a mini trampoline, furthermore, the act of bouncing on one is called rebounding….
