If you never tune in to Biggest Loser but want some great motivation to lose (or maintain) weight, tonight is one of the 2 best episodes of the season. Tonight, the remaining 5 contestants will get “celebrity” makeovers. Though Ramon went home a week too soon, he did give himself a great makeover before going to see his new love, Jessica, as we saw at the end of last week’s show. He was the one who had the most to work with in terms of a new look (and he looks adorable!) but it will still be inspiring and awesome to see the others, less than 3 months after they began their weight loss journey. It is amazing to see how much change can occur in such a short time! Yes, it’s true that they are part of an extreme weight loss program, which no doubt would be near impossible to do under normal circumstances, but still….amazing, inspirational, emotional and one of my favorite TV nights of the year. Neither half empty or half full, these 5 people are half GONE! The trainers and the host, not too bad to look at either! Tonight. NBC. 8pm eastern time. Talk it up tomorrow.
If you made it through the long weekend without much of a gain on the scale this week, congrats to YOU. I am pretty happy with my Monday weight, though I admit to weighing in on Saturday and not being quite as happy. When sodium rich foods and or hard liquor enter my body, I become a sponge…literally. Best antidote, a natural diuretic, like asparagus. Last night a big bowl of garlic, asparagus and mushrooms for my main course and lots of water, fruits and veggies filled my day. Makes for a much less frustrating Monday!
The diuretic I dread these days—coffee with caffeine—I accidentally drank a full cup of Mitch’s this morning, so that’s your warning if you are taking class or training with me today—I am sure I will be on chipmunk speed and rambling way too much. My body does not process the caffeine well these days. I need to pay better attention when I pour my coffee in the morning and stop mulit-tasking!
I will begin collecting money for the annual luncheon at the Asian Fusion Buffet in Coral Springs. This event that Ellen has carried on for 16 years will be at 1 pm on Wednesday January 25. While it started as a SilverSneakers event, back in our Quadrangle days, we are extending an invitation to ALL our students. If you take any of mine or Ellen’s classes at TFC, and would like to join us, place $10 in an envelope and PRINT your name. You are more than welcome to bring guests…include their $10 in your envelope and print their name/names on the envelope as well. The day of the event, we will take attendance and if you are not there,we can return your money to you. Easy enough. There is always a huge turnout and it’s nice to get together outside of the gym.
Once again, if you know anyone that is displaced from their SilverSneakers program because of the change in ownership at Bally, let them know about our program in Tamarac. We have more chairs and plenty of equipment.
Time to start burning off that caffeine. Make it a marvelous Monday!

I will be at Tamarac Fitness Center at 9:30 this morning for a stuffing and pie burner….Where will you be?
Have you heard that LA Fitness has purchased most of the Bally Total Fitness Centers? Yes, the one right here in Coral Springs was part of the sale. Hoping to see some of my old SilverSneakers students come join us in Tamarac at Tamarac Fitness Center. There are 8 classes a week specifically for YOU and I am teaching them with my friend Ellen, who I started teaching SilverSneakers with way back in the 90s at the Quadrangle. With the added classes we have plenty of room for more….and if the classes get too full, we will add more classes so it’s all good. Come check us out at 7935 West McNab Road, or call Ron or Wendie at 954 726 1070.
IF ONLY IT WERE THIS EASY!!!
Hope you all had a wonderful day celebrating, eating, drinking and being merry. Thanksgiving, one of the single best days of the year. Let me repeat…single best day…definitely NOT a 4 day or even a 2 day holiday. Today, we move! Though the answers vary, the average amount of calories consumed on this holiday are sometimes more than we eat the entire rest of the week! 4,000…5,000…6,000 or more. This is all part of what makes it so special. Been working your ass off to lose weight? Sitting at the computer burns about the least amount of calories possible. Get up and get moving! Unfortunately there is no magic button, or solution. Yesterday we celebrated. Today we pay. That is the reality, but it’s all good!
Thanks to our guests for the great company and all the goodies. It was a wonderful gathering of friends and family made perfect by Kyle and Nicole’s phone call from their holiday celebration. As for my local Nicole…I just hope you weren’t planning a lot of black Friday shopping!!! OUCH. RICE–rest, ice, compression, elevation…and yes, no better way to do that than watching old movies. Heal fast.
Practicing daily gratitude has truly shown me that I have so much more than one person could ever want or need. I realize that my glass is not half empty or half full…mine runneth over! Wishing my family and friends, near and far, a peaceful and loving Thanksgiving filled with more than enough. Eat, drink and be merry. Tomorrow we work it off!!!! Much love to all. Thank YOU for your constant support of this site and the opportunity for us to all be connected.
Kyle and Nicole, we send you love and please extend that to the rest of the family. ENJOY IT ALL!
To my friends that have suffered the very greatest losses this year, I wish you strength, faith and miracles. They do happen every day. I think of you without pause and hope your find rays of sunshine. Hold on tight to your loved ones and your memories and know that love never dies.
Let me begin by saying, there wasn’t too much about last night’s BL episode that I really liked and IF you already saw it, you probably can imagine that it got worse for me as it went on. Firstly, I hate temptation challenges, especially when the only way to win is to eat, and it was really just like a lottery. With numbers attached to the bottom of the plates, the winner would end up with the lowest number, and there would be second and third place. The prizes were all very inspiring to make one want to go back for more food until they got what they thought might be the lowest number. With 5 minutes to eat, these people could put away a lot of calories if they wanted to. In the end Vinny wins first place and gets a 3 pound advantage, Becky comes in 2nd and picks a $25,000 Cybex home gym (NICE!!!) and Antone gets $500.00.
Of course there is a lot of training and I do love watching Anna train her people on the tennis court. We sit a heart-to-heart between Bob and Big Vinny and Dolvett does football drills with John, the coach. Then its back to the ranch for a healthy Thanksgiving dinner. They all talk about what they are thankful for and Bob spoke from his heart about his overweight sister. Now that must be pretty frustrating, trainer Bob.
Challenge time. The contestants will race one mile UP Jacob’s ladder….that is 5280 feet. 3 more prizes await the winners and each winner gets to keep their prize and give away a duplicate. John, Sunny and Ramon win. John chooses a one pound advantage and will pick the one to give it to at the end, Sunny chooses the BL Meal Plan and gives the second one to Bonnie (nice). My boy Ramon gets the $2,500 and gives the other $2,500 to Vinny.
Now, I have to say that I found the prizes all a bit confusing. Who has to be there to get one, who has to be at home, who gets a pound, loses a pound, advantages, disadvantages…all this while flipping back and forth and trying to hear some of our favorites on the X Factor was too much work at the end of a busy day. None of it would matter to me at the very sad weigh in. Vinny lost 11 pounds, Becky 5, Antone 8, John 5, Sunny 5, Ramon 5.
OH NO NOT RAMON!!!!! I could lose any of them, but not Ramon. But in the end, a lot of crying for me. Sad tears to see him go, happy tears to see him after he gave himself a makeover before going to see his new love, Jess. What a cutie with his haircut and his trimmed beard. When he came to the ranch he was 355 pounds and now he is 245 and we see him and Jessica training together on the beach and then they go to cross something off their bucket list. They both looked like they were having an awesome time skydiving and Ramon tells us the next step for them is the big plunge. I just don’t feel her love for him as he keeps expressing and showing for her. I hope I am very wrong. Love you, Ramon. Can’t wait to see you again.
Next week it’s the make-over episode. YAY!!! And at the end, a weigh-in and an elimination that leaves the final 4. Where does the time go?
If you are hosting Thanksgiving, consider putting out mixed nuts as part of your appetizers. With anti-aging, blood-pressure lowering, immune, blood vessel and brain boosting properties, a handful of mixed nuts is a great thing to munch on while having a cocktail, enjoying loved ones…and maybe some football, this Thursday. Rich in vitamins, healthy fats, anti-oxidants and fiber, they may even reduce the body’s response to stress, which is always good, especially this time of year.
As stress levels (good and bad stress) continue to rise, let’s continue to eat and move in ways that help rid the body (mind and soul) of those elevated stress hormones. Drinking plenty of water, getting in those daily doses of movement, even those 10 minute walks, and getting ample sleep will help keep smiles on everyone’s faces as we celebrate our bounty of blessings.
This is the time of year I begin to focus on making sure we take time to stretch, breathe, and practice stress reduction (and gratitude, of course) in all my classes. If you are local and need a break from everything, come on out at 7 tonight and join me for a peaceful “stretch reduction,” class at Tamarac Fitness Center. I will also be teaching Senior Strength at 11:30 am and Cardio-Sculpt at 6pm.
With Thanksgiving this week, and the start to the holiday eating, drinking, shopping, visiting, hosting, spending and unfortunately stressing, officially beginning, it is time to take a deep breath and hang on to not only savor the ride, but to come off (or out) of it feeling happy, healthy, terrific and only the better off from all of it.
As it gets harder and harder to get in your daily workouts, make sure you set some time aside for them. Maybe it’s only twice a week at the gym instead of 3 or 4 times…maybe it’s only a 30 minute (cranked up) workout, instead of an hour. Maybe yoga or Pilates is more effective and purposeful some days, than jumping up and down or treading for an hour. Try to find workouts that better not just your body, but also your soul. If time is really crunched or you find yourself away from your usual routine, WALK. Even 3 ten minute walks a day will help keep the holiday pounds away! As we travel together through the next 5 or 6 weeks, look at each one as they begin to unfold and find some time for YOU.
Knowing Thanksgiving will be a day of indulgence, let it be! I truly believe we all should have one day a week where we let ourselves enjoy the foods and libations we deprive ourselves of the rest of the week, anyway. In as much as we want to achieve and maintain our health and weight goals, we also need to enjoy holidays with our families and loved ones, WITHOUT feeling guilty about a serving (ok, or two) of stuffing or a piece of apple pie. If you are hosting the holiday, stock up (or ask your guests to bring) containers for leftovers. It will make waking up on Friday morning and getting back on track much easier.
Thinking ahead, preparing and MOVING will help us prevent that extra 7-10 pounds of holiday fat from finding a home on our hips, thighs, bellies and butts. We can do this. We can enjoy it all and still feel happy, healthy and terrific when we turn the calendar to 2012.
