Curing the Incurable

After weeks of wracking my brains out, reading, researching, trying to make head or tails out of what’s going on with so many people being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I am convinced of several things.  I will refrain from saying anything more about the test and Big Pharma, because I think I have already expressed my feeling on that. (Ya think??) I will say that I revisited The China Study, specifically the chapter on this disease, and am reminded of one of the many reasons I chose a plant-based diet.  In study after study, from continent to continent, culture to culture, those who develop diabetes are those who consume the most animal protein. While I will not bore you with all the details of the many studies, “all the findings support the idea that both across and within populations, high-fiber, whole, plant-based foods protect against diabetes, and high-fat, high-protein, animal-based foods promote diabetes.“  Western medicine is prescribing a diet that neglects these findings, (for several different reasons) and we are being made to feel that we are doing all we can and still “failing” at our efforts.

While radically changing our diets is incredibly impractical and often rather undesirable,  how practical or desirable is it to have a lifelong condition such as diabetes?  The big bonus is the same “diet” that can prevent diabetes can prevent so many other dread diseases.  I am a firm believer that The China Study should be required reading for EVERYONE.  No, we don’t always want to know, as ignorance can be bliss…but illness definitely is NOT and knowledge is power.

And never, ever underestimate the power of exercise.  What a beautiful thing to lunch yesterday with almost 100  of our students. The SilverSneakers program has done so much to improve the quality of life of senior citizens…and me!

You Make me Feel Like Dancing

Large group, mostly men, surrounds couples jit...

What a great time we had with my sister, Arlene and my brother-in-law, Ron these past few days while they visited from the Big Apple.  We got in eating at some of our favorite local spots (Sakura, Big Bear and Falafel Bistro) had some great talks, learned a lot about fracking (those of us that wish for our country to be counting on our own resources for energy need to know the current dangers of fracking as the reality of this goal) and enjoyed an afternoon at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, always a great destination with out-of-towners.  The highlight of that outing was DEFINITELY watching some swing dancing in the area outside the casino, where a band was playing all my favorite big band tunes.  There was one woman who obviously was far from a spring chicken but had legs and a figure that most of us females would die for.  She wore a very open knit short dress over something and some high-heeled dancing shoes with her long hair pulled back in a pony-tail and a smile that NEVER left her face.  She displayed living proof that nothing hurts and we are ageless when we are dancing.  Before we walked away I HAD to let her know how joyful and uplifting it was just to watch her and be in her presence!  Moments like this, people like her…they are where I get my inspiration and motivation from.  Definitely.

When we dance, we kick up the volume on our happy hormones–our endorphins.  Same thing happens when we do aerobic exercise.  As my darling student Shirley says, when she was younger she always wished to die on the dance floor–now she wishes to die in exercise class!  While I never want that to happen in my class, I totally understand what she means.

In the midst of the chaos of the holiday season… family, friends, partying, traveling, shopping, overspending, overeating, overdrinking etc., PLEASE find some time to MOVE in a way that gets YOUR endorphins pumping.  It is good for EVERYTHING that ails us, and even what doesn’t.

Speaking of an endorphin rush, congratulations to Gary Jones (Nicole’s dad) on earning his pilot’s license last week.  What an accomplishment.  We know you will be extra careful when transporting our precious cargo :)

I will be posting my schedule changes for the holiday season.  For this week, it’s full speed ahead.   If you are a SilverSneakers member and find yourself part of the fallout at Bally, come on down to Tamarac Fitness Center.  We’ve got a chair with YOUR name on it!  I’ll be there today, tomorrow, Wednesday and Friday at 11:30.

Make it a magical Monday.  Much love.

Weighing in on Monday Morning

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSAMSS5TIRNyMr0ZSoClUmhqHOHNFaPSY1EdMjla6BAy88sbkYZIf you made it through the long weekend without much of a gain on the scale this week, congrats to YOU.  I am pretty happy with my Monday weight, though I admit to weighing in on Saturday and not being quite as happy.  When sodium rich foods and or hard liquor enter my body, I become a sponge…literally.  Best antidote, a natural diuretic, like asparagus.  Last night a big bowl of garlic, asparagus and mushrooms for my main course and lots of water, fruits and veggies filled my day.  Makes for a much less frustrating Monday!

The diuretic I dread these days—coffee with caffeine—I accidentally drank a full cup of Mitch’s this morning, so that’s your warning if you are taking class or training with me today—I am sure I will be on chipmunk speed and rambling way too much.  My body does not process the caffeine well these days.  I need to pay better attention when I pour my coffee in the morning and stop mulit-tasking!

I will begin  collecting money for the annual luncheon at the Asian Fusion Buffet in Coral Springs.  This event that Ellen has carried on for 16 years will be at 1 pm on Wednesday January 25.  While it started as a SilverSneakers event, back in our Quadrangle days, we are extending an invitation to ALL our students.  If you take any of mine or Ellen’s classes at TFC, and would like to join us, place $10 in an envelope and PRINT your name.  You are more than welcome to bring guests…include their $10 in your envelope and print their name/names on the envelope as well.  The day of the event, we will take attendance and if you are not there,we can return your money to you.  Easy enough.  There is always a huge turnout and it’s nice to get together outside of the gym.

Once again, if you know anyone that is displaced from their SilverSneakers program because of the change in ownership at Bally, let them know about our program in Tamarac.  We have more chairs and plenty of equipment.

Time to start burning off that caffeine.  Make it a marvelous Monday!

YOU are AWESOME

Yes, it’s Vegan Feast Thursday and I am always excited about that.  Instead of staying on topic, though, I want to focus on YOU, because I am so happy for all of YOU.

Firstly, congrats to our very own peaceandfitness Biggest Losers.  Do you realize that JUST amongst our little group, BJ, Carolanne and Jeff have taken off close to 100 pounds in the past few months?  In three months Carol has taken off 15 pounds, almost 15 inches and I can attest to the fact that she is looking FANTASTIC.  Jeff made it to ONE-derland recently and is working on those last few pounds.  Having seen him recently, I can also say FANTASTIC job!    BJ accomplished the greatest task, losing almost 10 pounds while on vacation in Europe and is well on her way to goal number 1 of 50 pounds lost by her birthday.  Rita shared some before and after pics and I can clearly see the big difference.  All of you are showing the determination and drive it takes to reach goals instead of just setting them,  and I am so proud of you!

Weight, however, is not the only goal we strive for in the gym.  Every single day I am incredibly inspired by my students for their devotion to their physical, mental and emotional health which all flourish in a group  fitness program.  Yesterday I admired Charlotte’s posture in class.  Every day, I admire her youthful and open mind.   Yesterday she let me know she will be traveling next week and not to worry when she isn’t there…did I mention she turns 93 next month?  Nothing slows this woman down. Have I mentioned Al and Margo?  Al walks 5 miles in the morning before coming to the gym for class and his own workout which includes weight lifting and some killer cardio on the versaclimber.  He may miss an occasional class so that he and Margo can mow, weed wack and clean BOTH their yards.  I asked them if they nap and they looked at me like I had an extra eye.  Then they put the top down on their convertible and drove away.  Al is 85 and looks great for ANY age.  Margo is naturally beautiful on the inside and out with her long, untouched hair.  Just beautiful at 75.  Fred and Shirley, Gary and Sydelle, Don, Marie, Fredda, Dr. Dorothy and so many other SilverSneakers students, inspire me and those around them in countless ways.  Despite challenges that you may have, you come to class smiling and laughing.  You dance, you sing and you make my job seem like anything BUT work!

YOU are AWESOME.  Keep caring for yourselves and each other.  The positive ripple effect is huge.  Thank you.

Since it is VFT,  I hope you will consider a meatless meal.  3 women who spent 48 hours on a plant-based diet showed medical benefits that no pill could EVER provide!  YOUR health is really important to me and to all your loved ones. Namaste.
