Let the Music Move YOU

Looking for a quick, fun, immediate sense of stress reduction?  Let the music move you.  A study in Nature Neuroscience found that listening to our favorite songs or even simply anticipating certain parts of a song can cause a pleasurable flood of that feel good chemical, dopamine.  Pick a few of your favorites and listen to them a few times a day.  “These doses of dopamine can lower your stress, removing the trigger that cause you to seek alcohol.” says Edward Roth, M.T.B.C, a professor of music therapy at Western Michigan University.

Another great way to use music as a pick me up is to start with a song that matches your mood and then pick one a little more upbeat and finish move on to the totally feel good and happy selections.   The change in the mood of the tunes, will transfer to your moods and the next thing you know, you are whistling a happy tune.

Well beyond stress reduction, music has so many great benefits.  Self-medicate with music.  It requires no doctor’s prescription and has no negative side effects. Hope this Saturday finds you singing a happy song.

The first Friday of spring.  YAY.  Can’t wait to welcome the weekend in with some incredibly peaceful postures tonight at TFC, while we raise money to feed the hungry in Ft. Lauderdale.  I’ll be at the gym at about 6.  In keeping with the idea that we all have more than enough to share with others, I’ll be bringing some bottles of wine that I have received through the year, but haven’t opened yet.  If anyone wants to get to the gym a little early we can toast to the weekend, the season and the reason we are all together.  The generosity of my students, friends and co-workers has helped us raise enough money to feed hundreds a people a hot meal!  Remember to dress very comfortably and bring whatever helps you be more comfortable (ie., socks, sweatshirt, towel, washcloth and in Carol’s case….gloves!)  If you are planning on coming and haven’t made your donation yet, please get to the gym a little early so that once the clock strikes 6:30 we can be down on our mats in shavasana, cell phones off, and breathing in peace.

Wherever you are, celebrate spring…the weekend…and remember that if you have more than enough, you have much to be grateful for.  Namaste.

 

 

 

What is YOUR Heart Saying?

If I have said it once, I have said it a bazillion times, but I have to say it again.  My students are sooo awesome.  All I did was mention the fund-raising class I am doing and people starting handing me donations.  I wasn’t even prepared for that, but I have now officially started an envelope and my goal is to raise $1,000 by March 29.  That can feed a lot of hungry mouths!  Thank you for kicking off my March Mission!

Congratulations to my webmaster, on his new set of wheels and even though you are leaving them behind, have a great business road trip!  Looks like it will be a while longer before I (he) figures out why my images aren’t making it to Facebook, but it’s all good.   To think we started this website as a way to get my schedule up when I had to leave my LA Fitness students behind.  Who knew I would take to blogging every single morning?!?!   I will always remember what you told me, Kyle…it’s my site and so I can do anything I want with it.  Thank you for empowering me with those words.   In reading the “about the author” at the end of Chopra’s most current book,  I know why I love him so much.  He bills himself as a promoter of peace, health and well-being.   Those are always the messages I want to spread, too…here and everywhere.

In speaking about choices,  Chopra sums up something I wish I had read years ago…something we should be teaching our children from early on….something we can relate to every area of our lives, including, yes, diet…and exercise!  He says

“When you make any choice at all you can ask yourself two things:  First of all, what are the consequences of this choice that I am making?  In your heart you will immediately know what these are.  Secondly, will this choice that I’m making bring now bring happiness to me and to those around me?  If the answer is yes, then go ahead with the choice.  If the answer is no, if that choice brings distress either to you or to those around you, than don’t make that choice.  It’s as simple as that.  There is ONLY once choice, out of the infinity of choices available in every second, that will create happiness for as well as those around you…At the moment you consciously make a choice, pay attention to your body….If your body sends a message of comfort, that’s the right choice.  If your body sends a message of discomfort, then it’s not the appropriate choice. “  And of course, he reminds us to listen to our hearts and wait for a sensation because, “most people think the heart is mushy and sentimental but it’s NOT.  The heart is intuitive; it’s holistic, it’s contextual, it’s rational.  The heart has a computing ability that is far  more accurate and far more precise than anything within the limits of rational thought.”

I have read these words over and over again.  They have really impacted me in a very positive way and are definitely helping me, even with my food choices.  I hope they will do the same for you.

I’ll be at TFC for senior strength training at 11:30, cardio-sculpting (or what I really call “instructors choice”) at 6 and yoga/Pilates at 7.  It’s going to be incredibly hard to watch Biggest Loser tonight without Chism…but it’s a TV show and there is always hope we see him again!

month of March there is so much to look forward to.  Holidays, spring breaks, vacations, clock changes, and my favorite, the beginning of spring.  My mission for this month is to raise awareness and much need money for  a much greater Mission..the All Saints Soup Kitchen in Ft. Lauderdale.  Operating over 20 years, this little kitchen and it’s volunteers serve a complete hot meal to about 150 people a day, 7 days a week. As I will be attending a large fund-raising effort at the end of the month, I am working on ways to gather donations that I may then bring to this fund-raiser which hopes to make enough money to get the kitchen some much needed renovations as well as stock the pantry, fridge, freezer to not only provide the daily meals, and also to provide food for families as they “shop” the pantry on Sundays.

I will be doing a peaceful Pilates/yin yoga class on Friday March 23 from 6:30-7:30 PM at Tamarac Fitness Center.  The gym is located at 7935 West McNab Road.  Members and non-members welcome.  A $10 donation will get you a spot in this class.  Please try to get the money to me before the class, and non-members arrive about 15 minutes early, please.  I will accept money up and until a few minutes before the class starts, but it will start promptly!  Cash or a check made out to The All Saints Soup Kitchen (If you already given or sent one made out to The All Saints Mission,that is absolutely fine, too) placed in an envelope with your full name printed on it and given to me before the event, or left at the desk with Ron/Wendie or Rae will work, too.  100% of the money raised will go directly to this Mission.
